Celebrations take flight at Manor Primary School

We began our Coronation celebrations in dramatic style at Manor Primary with a fly past from nearby RAF Benson on 3 May.

During the fly past, our children formed the Royal Cipher on the school playground, so that the crew could take aerial shots to commemorate the occasion.

Other activities over the course of the week included two Coronation competitions – in one, entrants were invited to make bunting with an environmental, nature theme in keeping with the King’s interests, while the other asked them to complete a portrait of His Majesty to be displayed in the school’s hall.

The children also took part in an assembly on Thursday 4 May about the Coronation and King Charles III, while the week culminated in a full-day celebration on Friday 5 May, when children attended school dressed in red, white and blue.

Friday’s fun-packed schedule included Coronation-themed puzzles and the creation of crowns and Union flags, along with a picnic lunch, complete with burgers.

The afternoon closed with a special assembly, which was attended by the local vicar, and where prizes were presented to the competition winners. The school orchestra played ‘God Save the King’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, and the children also performed a new Coronation song called ‘To the Sound of Trumpets’.

“It is very important for us to mark the occasion of the Coronation, as it is a once-in-a-generation event within our history that everyone can be involved in,” said Headteacher Jessica Robinson. “It will promote a community spirit and family togetherness.”

Other GLF schools celebrating the Coronation included Windmill Primary School, where they buried a time capsule, and Floreat Montague Park, where a commemorative tree was planted.

At Danetree Primary School, the children took part in a King’s Parade, while at Salfords Primary, Marden Lodge, and Warren Mead, the children dressed as royalty for the day, and at Frogmore Junior School they posed for photographs with a life-size cut-out of the King.

Glyn School’s celebrations included a Coronation Staff Bake Off competition, and Cordwalles Junior School’s children each received a commemorative medal; children at Pine Ridge and Lorraine wore red, white and blue, and at Banstead Infants they took part in the Big Help Out.
