GLF Schools

GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

How do we teach?

PE lessons at Manor Primary School are designed to engage, excite and introduce our children to the importance of being active from a young age. We teach why it is important to look after the body whilst providing the experiences of a variety of sports to allow for this.

These lessons enable children to make exercise a regular habit from a young age, improve their motor skills and help to expand the options they see for themselves in their futures. Our curriculum is carefully crafted to include a wide variety of sports throughout the year, involving different skills such as co-ordination, strength, speed and stamina. In addition, teamwork, critical thinking and independence is also instilled through our lessons.

We do this by incrementally building on each skill from EYFS through to Year Six. An example of this is the progression in co-ordination shown below:

Children are formatively assessed throughout the term before a summative assessment at the end of term. This enables teachers to build on the areas of need in their classes during each term so that the children are prepared for the progression of that skill the following year.

Why do we teach in this way?

PE is a subject that brings children together, encourages involvement and enables children to build their mental and physical strength.

We believe that our children learn best when they:

  • Have access to high quality equipment
  • Experience competing in sporting events, both inter-school and outer-school
  • Can see themselves in different athletes
  • Believe what they are doing in achievable and they can make progress
  • Share experiences of activities outside of school with their peers
  • Understand the full process of physical activity, such as warming up and cooling down.
  • Can input ideas for activities and competitions they would like to have an experience with

How is this adapted for vulnerable learners and high attainers?

PE is a subject whereby children arrive with varying experiences of participation within exercise and what exercise looks like. The variety of sports, competitions and experiences ensure that all children, no matter their background, have access to participating in different sports throughout their time at Manor Primary School. Children are supported via mixed ability and experienced teams or partners. All children are encouraged to participate and see their value in a team, whatever the role. This curriculum provides all children with the ability to succeed.
